Working with the Museum for African Art and the Fowler Museum at UCLA, Darling Green designed and fabricated 23 large display cases, some of which were over ten feet long, with fabric lined interiors and built-in lighting. The cases were made to transport, store, and re-use. They could easily be moved despite their size. Each lighting element was mounted to a steel rail via magnets and could be adjusted quickly. 53 new mounts for objects were made and painted on site. We also created a custom four-foot map graphic. The design of this show was meant to draw the viewer into each case. Exterior lighting was kept very low and we minimized distraction in the space while highlighting the case interiors and using a variety of blocks to give a sense of rhythm to the interplay of sculpture. The collector and lender of the objects; Dr. Jay Last, said “I feel as if I am seeing these things for the first time.”
